Making a quality website

16 10 2009

In this post I am going to tell you the main points that a quality website needs.

The first point is that, no matter what you think, the website is NOT about you. It is about the customer. The main factor of a website is to entice the visitor, and to keep them interested throughout the time they are on your site. Do this by having sections in your site devoted to visitors, for example a forum for them to discuss problems they are having, where both you and other visitors can provide answers.

Build up your content. This doesn’t mean posting any old thing on your site, it means find good quality content relative to your industry. You can either write this yourself, or if you aren’t much of a writer, there are many different websites which offer articles that you can post. A good website for this is www.ezinearticles.com. You should include a blog on your website as well. This helps build up your content that little bit more.

You do not have to pay a company to design your website for you. It is relatively easy to make your own site using some of the tools available on the web, and is obviously a lot cheaper. If you decide to develop your own site, have a handful of people that have nothing to do with your company, and ask them to provide feedback on what your site looks like and what they think could make it better. An un-biased set of eyes is a priceless tool for creating your site.

Make sure that your website is easy to navigate. There is nothing that turns off prospective customers more than a cluttered website where you can’t find what you want. Always have a ‘category index’ at the side or top of your page, it makes it so much easier and more pleasant for your visitors.

Another essential for your site is contact details. By law, you must include these, but it is also good for your visitors, as they will want to know where you are based and how to contact you. It’s not an essential, but a good idea is to include an ‘industry news’ section. It helps build up the content on your site, and is of interest to some visitors.

My next post will be about directing traffic to your site. Try some of the ideas above, and leave me a comment telling me how they worked for you. All the best.
